  • Every era of major league baseball seems to include a pitcher whose numbers are outstanding except where it matters most to pennant races: in the won-lost column. Whether it’s a Bert Blyleven (287-250) in the 1970s and 1980s or a Tim Belcher (146-140) in the 1990s, these are pitchers with great stuff who, on their best days, are absolutely unhittable – but in the end, they’re basically .500 pitchers, a fact that, more often than not, is more of an indication of the caliber of teams they played for rather than their pitching prowess.

    10. PEDRO RAMOS (117-160, 135 FLP). The lanky Cuban was a mainstay of the Washington Senators’ and Minnesota Twins’ rotations from 1955 to 1961, in which time he piled up a record of 78-112. This is a collection of 500 ceramic pitchers, including almost everything from handbuilt to wheel-thrown, practical to sculptural, round to square.

  • This is the group Darvish joins. Of the 12 previous starting pitchers to strike out 500 batters before recording 500 innings pitched, none have sustained success deep into their careers. All have fallen to something, whether Tommy John surgery or freak injuries or a swift late-20s decline. None of the retired players have made the Hall of Fame. Of the other active players, only Strasburg seems to have a chance, and he is far too young to warrant any Hall assumptions.
