  • A young woman refuses to believe that her fiancee was killed in action in WWI and sets about finding out what happened to him and his comrades in their final days. The one thing you can count on from Jeunet is that you will be treated to a beautiful looking film and once again he does not disappoint. A Very Long Engagement is a visual feast with a score to match and complete with his usual ensemble cast of nicely played, likable eccentrics, this is a very difficult film to dislike. Although it does have its flaws. They mainly lie in the way that the romantic elements to the story and those concerning combat don't quite gel; I couldn't help thinking that I was actually watching two films spliced together. The investigation is also a little haphazard and unstructured and it just seemed that facts kept randomly coming to light without much in the way of narrative flow. Having said all that, it does have moments of genius and certain scenes are captivating. Audrey Tautou puts in another fine performance but Marion Cotillard virtually steals the film out from under her as a vengeful prostitute and I wish I'd seen a lot more of her character. As a whole it doesn't quite fit together and as a result lacks the emotional resonance it could have had, but the good far, far outweighs the bad.

  • A Very Long Engagement is Jeunet's most accomplished effort- if not necessarily by far, given his illustrious filmography- because it crosses the barrier between his world and invades ours.

“A Very Long Engagement” was god book. It was slow at the beginning but then it starts to pick up in the middle. It was also sometimes hard to understand because they used French terms and war terms quite often and I did not know what they were or meant. Also the book would switch from third person to first person to third again. Another thing the author did that made it hard to read was switch from the present to the past without much warning. I think that the book would have been better if I knew some more war terms. I think you have to know the basic terms for the war, so little parts and minor details don’t confuse you. On a brighter not I thought the book had a lot of details to the scenes and you could imagine what was happening at the time. I liked it because it was a good story about a woman who had never been able to walk since she was young being fearless and taking control. It shows a good message about love and how you should never stop looking for the one you love no matter what people tell you. I also think that the book is for people who have plenty of time to read it and can give it a lot of attention. If I had to recommend this book to someone I would recommend it to. a young adult or someone with a lot of time on their hands to pay close attention. I would also recommend to someone who was really in love with another person. I think they could really relate. I’m happy I read this book and I do hope that more people will read it.

We drove to an old movie theatre in Bala Cynwyd, close to Philly. As we approached the theatre, I saw the name of the film we were to see was “A Very Long Engagement’. As I entered the theatre, I noticed that the film was a French film starting Audrey Tautou.

Visually the film was fantastic, with some of the trench warfare scenes quite harrowing. But I agree with Lynne it was a mishmash. When it ended I walked out of the cinema and didn't know what to think about it. If you like great visual scenes go and see it. But I think there are other better movies out there
