  • Eight weeks later, Booker debuted as "G.I. Bro" on Putski's Western Wrestling Alliance Live! program. The character was a tie-in to the raging Gulf War and the WWF's Sgt. Slaughter angle. Even though the WWA met its demise some time later, Booker continued to wrestle on the Texas independent circuit, often with his brother Lash, who performed as Stevie Ray. Eight weeks later, Booker debuted as "G.I. Bro" on Putski's Western Wrestling Alliance Live! program. The character, a tie-in to the raging Gulf War and the WWE's Sgt. Slaughter angle, would return in years to come when Booker traveled to WCW. Even though the WWA would meet its demise some time later, Booker continued to wrestle on the Texas indy circuit, often with his brother Stevie Ray. During one such show, they were spotted by Skandor Akbar who hired them to work for the Global Wrestling Federation, which he and Eddie Gilbert were involved in. Gilbert, soon to be fired from the GWF, did one thing before he left: he teamed Stevie Ray and Booker T together as the Ebony Experience.

  • Talented bookers are key to any successful promotion. It is this element, even above athletic performance, that generally determines the success or failure of a promotion. Even so, the booker must have wrestlers of sufficient skill to work with to make the matches appear to be at least somewhat plausible.

The two men finished their feud on the next Smackdown, as Teddy Long arranged for them to fight in a "No Disqualification" Match. Booker T was able to come out on top, knocking Heidenreich cold with a tremendous chair shot for the victory. Heidenreich would come out the next week on Smackdown and read a poem dedicated to Booker T, basically ending the feud. Booker T then wrestled on Smackdown against various opponents for the next few weeks, with no real build-up towards any match. At Booker T wasn't even featured on the card, although he did win a special "30 Man Raw/Smackdown Battle Royal" Dark Match that went on the DVD, giving him a victory at the biggest show of the year (even if it wasn't shown live).

  • A furious GM Teddy Long brought Booker T & Sharmell to the ring on the next Smackdown, with Long telling Booker T that the doctors didn't find a thing wrong with him. Long also emphasized that Booker T had to sign a contract to face the Boogeyman at Wrestlemania, to make up for the missed match. Booker T refused at first, saying that a 5-time champion shouldn't have to fight a freak. But when Long threatened to fire Booker T, he opted to 'defend his wife's honor', especially after Long mentioned giving him a partner to take on the Boogeyman. It was a trick from Long, though, as he placed Sharmell in the match as well, terrifying Booker T's wife. Booker T had to face Paul Birchall in a 'warm-up' match on the final Smackdown before the PPV, with Sharmell not wanting to leave his side. Predictably, the Boogeyman again appeared, this time coming up from behind Sharmell and kidnapping her! Booker T chased after them, getting counted out. He eventually found Sharmell in the back by following a trail of worms, rescuing his panicked wife (as the Boogeyman watched and laughed from nearby).
