  • [Spoiler Alert] A Christmassy Ted starts out with Father Ted getting into the holiday mood when there's a knock on the door. A baby has been left on the doorstep. Could we be in for another sentimental allusion to the Christ Child? No, because the person who was leaving the baby got the address wrong. Father Ted, in a poke at several holiday specials, comments on how if the baby had been delivered into their hands there would be all kinds of Christmas baby antics. And then the show dispenses with that storyline cliche and moves into it's usual weird territory with The Golden Cleric Award. An award similar to an Oscar or Golden Globe for the Priest of the year. Father Ted is chosen to receive it.

A Christmassy Ted is the Christmas special of Channel 4 sitcom and was broadcast on 24 December 1996. Unlike other episodes of the series which were 21-22 minutes, this was 55 minutes long.

, who previously collaborated with Linehan and Mathews, is one of the names mentioned along with in Mrs Doyle's guessing game. In 2013, Riley noted the scene's similarity to a passage in 's , where the protagonist attempts to guess the name of the person who previously held his soul. Riley also suggests that this passage is inspired by the early Irish myth , where the hero Conair asks for a woman's name, only for her to list dozens. Noting that other O'Brien works contained elements of Irish mythology, Riley concluded, "I contend that Mrs Doyle's bit in "A Christmassy Ted" has a comic lineage stretching back more than 1000 years into the misty beginnings of Irish history. If anyone knows a comic riff which has been around longer, I'd love to know." Father Luke Duke, one of the names Mrs Doyle mentions, was included as a character in , a novella written by for the 2008 spin-off collection .

3. A Christmassy Ted So many memorable moments in this Christmas special - The Golden Cleric awards, Mrs Doyle sabotaging the teasmaid and of course the priests lost in the lingerie department whilst Christmas shopping.
