  • I have been working with a client for awhile who was feeling somewhat "stuck." I sent her home with The Diet Survivor's Handbook, and she came in yesterday, clutching the book, saying, "This book changed my life."

  • Why I am calling myself a Diet Survivor? It sounds dramatic but I have spent the last 2 decades dieting. Has it helped me to become slim and fit? Given that only 5% of dieters ever keep the weight off, the answer is obvious. You can read about my journey on .

In this world where we think we should all look like Kate Moss, have a 24 inch waist, and fit in a size two, the authors of this book make a great attempt to get us to see ourselves in a positive manner even if we don't fit into what we think is an "ideal" look. This book is not about dieting (because, according to the book, Diet's don't work), it is about being able to listen to your body - feeding yourself with foods your bodies crave, eating when you are hungry, not gorging yourself, and listening to your body's internal clues as to whether you truly are hungry. It is about feeling good about yourself, regardless of what the scale says. I love this book so much. It sits at my bedside and I frequently go back to it to re-read multiple sections. This is a book that will help you re-train yourself on how you should eat based on your body, as well as feeling good about yourself. In each section there is also an activity to do to help you on your path to becoming a Diet Survivor. Would definitely recommend this book!

  • Getting together with a group of like-minded people can help you on your journey as a diet survivor. Do you know of other people who have also been caught on the diet rollercoaster? Invite them to meet – at your home, a coffee shop or restaurant – and see if they'd like to join you as you normalize eating, build self-acceptance and develop self-care.

This approach is incredibly empowering

We came up with the term diet survivor to help people understand that getting caught in the diet/binge cycle wreaks havoc on your relationship with food and your life, and that making an active decision to break this cycle takes courage. We wanted our readers to know that they are not alone, and to help them ease the shame that comes from feeling that you are a failure if you can’t lose weight and keep it off. Instead, it is our hope that as people learn the reasons why diets fail, they will feel empowered to join the growing number of others who have let go of dieting and reclaimed their lives.
