  • My 5-year-old is completely, utterly obsessed with drawing, and he takes it very seriously. He even has a preference for the type of crayons and pencils he uses! Anyway, he’s never been into doodle books before, as he prefers plain paper to draw his own things… but I brought out from the art cupboard the other day and it was a huge hit. The makers of the book really know exactly what appeals to boys — things like dragons, knights, monsters, sea creatures, robots, aliens, cowboys… etc, and the book really engages their imagination. This is our favourite doodle book for sure! (They also make a .)

Next came , also penned by Puck. The placemats book was equally beautiful; as a bonus, it was interactive. Recently My Foodie ABC Placemats went out of print, which is sad, but it paved the way for duopress’s hugely successful DOODLE book series. duopress has produced eight DOODLE books, with more on the way.

  • I recently wrote an article for Kidspot about colouring books for children and adults, and also spoke on Radio National () about the calming qualities of colouring books for both children and adults. They seem to be the new ‘in’ thing, but if your child is not really into colouring books, or you prefer something for your children which requires more thought and imagination, I can highly recommend ‘Doodle Books’ where some of the illustration is done for the child but they are required to add or innovate.

These books have been a godsend in our house, particularly the placemat ones below, which keep the small people from gnawing off my leg as they wait for dinner.I’ve seen some fabulous drawings in Doodle books by children who have claimed they ‘can’t draw’. They give some structure to a child’s drawing but are far from a colouring in book. Doodle books are perfect for times of calm during the day: for older children while younger children have a nap; while a parent or guardian is trying to enjoy a cup of life-restoring coffee or making a phonecall; or as an after dinner calming down activity.
