  • My friend at work was pleased to receive a Bible and a copy of ‘God On Mute’. Let's pray for a miracle. Pray this lost soul will come to faith when she understands God's ways and purposes are better than her's. Last time I asked she was on page 177.

Pete Greig, the acclaimed author of Red Moon Rising, has written his most intensely personal and honest account yet in God on Mute, a book born out of his wife Samie’s fight for her life and diagnosis of a debilitating brain tumor. Greig asks the timeless questions of what it means to suffer and to pray and to suffer through the silence because your prayers seem unanswered. This silence, Greig relates, is the hardest thing. The world collapses. Then all goes quiet. Words can’t explain, don’t fit, won’t work. People avoid you and don’t know what to say. So you turn to Him and you pray. You need Him more than ever before. But somehow…even God Himself seems on mute. In this heart-searching, honest and deeply profound book, Pete Greig looks at the hard side of prayer, how to respond when there seem to be no answers and how to cope with those who seek to interpret our experience for us. Here is a story of faith, hope and love beyond all understanding.

As it turned out, I didn't have to look far. The first book I put my hand on, ‘God On Mute’ by Pete Greig, was on a book shelf at home which I hadn't bothered to read before. What an amazing book! Clearly written, easily read, and divided into distinct sections addressing why some prayers appear to go unanswered. I found the Bible references and explanations a real revelation, a rich joy that still makes me want to read parts over and over to try and absorb the beauty and power of God's purpose and word and still.

In GOD ON MUTE, Pete Greig attacks questions about unanswered prayer with both faith and compassion, looking at the biblical and logic reasons for why prayers are sometimes not answered, how answers sometimes look much differently than what we thought they should, and how sometimes God answers with things far better than we knew to ask for. However, at the same time, he doesn’t shy away from dealing with the fact that sometimes it is as if all we get back from our requests of God is silence, and what those who have traveled that path in faith have had to say about that challenge. This is not a formulaic book. It is honest, personal (his wife deals with epileptic fits and other challenges they pray about throughout the book), and unflinching. It faces some of the toughest questions about prayer nose-to-nose and Mr. Grieg isn’t afraid to admit that while he may not have all of the answers, we are never alone in pondering the questions. You will get a great deal from exploring these questions with him if you read this book.  In the midst of it all, Pete Greig is a man who believes prayer is still one of the most important, if still quite mysterious, things we can do. Reading this book will help you come to it more honestly, and believe it or not, with greater confidence, determination, and faith in the God to whom we pray.

  • ‘Growing into maturity always involves a steady process of recentring from our own priorities and preferences to those of the other. That’s why our centre of gravity shifts as we mature spiritually. We begin to pray that God would change our hearts and rewire our motivation. We long to become more like Jesus. We ask God to help us become more humble, more loving, more faithful.’ (God on Mute, pp 250)
