The difference between good design and great design is not a simple matter of implementing all the right colors, illustrations and effects. Great design is, instead, what results when the perspectives of all of the key players are appropriately considered and reconciled in a synergistic fashion.
The NCMi mission, and challenge, is to help transition the managers of a dealership, one or two at a time, from good to great. We do this by focusing on world-class (great) department processes…what they are, why they’re critical, how to implement them, and how to execute them. Part two of this article series will select one or more department processes, and I’ll show you the difference between good and great. Remember, great processes that become disciplined habits produce great and predictable results!
Details are the difference between good and great. Details matter. As designers we should endeavor to understand the smallest of details and apply this understanding to projects everyday even at a job that isn’t your dream job. Everyday we should push when there’s nothing left. We should work with clients to help them understand technology, not just sell them something they don’t understand and make the complicated simple.
So there are athletes, thinkers, politicians, carpenters, doctors, lawyers, you name the trade and you will find those that do good work and great work. The line is so thin but it’s worth noting and talking about. Because at the end of the day it is important to do great work even when you don’t get awarded.
