  • The history of Easter Eggs as a symbol of new life should come as no surprise. The notion that the Earth itself was hatched from an egg was once widespread and appears in creation stories ranging from Asian to Ireland.

Every winter a round old man and his round old wife get to work. They paint and decorate eggs, they make baskets, and they make chocolate eggs. Then, when the Easter bells are ringing in the church, they take each child in their village a basket full Easter treats. As they work their little pet white rabbit watches them. As they paint the eggs he sits on the table watching, as they make the baskets he watches, and as they fill egg shaped moulds with chocolate he watches.
Then one year the round old couple are so tired that they are still fast asleep on Easter morning and "there was still work to be done." Something very special happens and their pet rabbit is no longer just an ordinary pet rabbit. Quietly and carefully the white rabbit fills up the baskets, loads them up on the wagons, and delivers them to all the children in the village.
This wonderful story of how the Easter Bunny came to get his job is beautifully and simply told with minimal but impeccably chosen text. Poignantly delicate artwork in soft colors compliments the story perfectly.

  • If you are looking for a Christian book to explain Easter to your toddler, The Story of Easter by Patricia Pingry and illustrated by Lorraine Wells may be a good starting point. The story presents a very basic presentation of Easter. The main points gathered from reading the book to my preschoolers were: 1) Easter occurs in the spring, 2) Jesus died on the cross, 3) we celebrate Easter because Jesus lives again, and 4) Jesus gave his life for us so that we can live too.
