  • An old black telephone sits intriguingly in a little inset in the wall, which is where the barns quirky name is derived from. This little cubby hole, just inside the huge threshing barn doors, is apparently where farm workers would keep an oily rag or leave a pasty for later commonly known as the keeping place.

While Robin continues to take on building work in London, Devon and France, Annabel divides her time between their converted farmhouse in Gascony and The Keeping Place, hidden in a sleepy hamlet between Salcombe and Kingsbridge, which they run as a B&B and occasionally rent out. Its a perfect party house, explains Annabel. It has lots of different areas where people can disappear to, and a central galleried dining hall where everyone comes together. People who rent it really love it, and it works particularly well when there are two families.

  • Its funny how some homes seem to lend themselves perfectly to Christmas. Especially barns full of warm wooden beams, roaring open fires, large rooms full of luxurious furnishings and deep, comfy sofas, with a big rustic table in a galleried dining hall and the ever-faithful Aga ready to cook meals any time of day, and warm cold hands (and dogs) after a bracing walk in the countryside. The Keeping Place has all these and more.

The Krowathunkooloong Keeping Place is a division of Gippsland and East Gippsland Aboriginal Cooperative (GEGAC) and provides cultural and tourism services to community organisations and local schools, with information about the Indigenous heritage and culture of the Gunaikurnai people of Gippsland.

  • We need to convert this expression of support into time, bodies and $$ to work on various projects associated with the Keeping Place. I have identified a number of sub-projects that need to be completed, and in some cases started from scratch.
