  • Zi Lan Liao learned to play the Chinese Harp (Guzheng) at the age of 3. By the age of 9 she was already winning major competitions in China, including the Young Musician of the Year in 1982. By the time she left China in 1982, her reputation as a virtuoso performer was already established. She made an immediate impact on her arrival in the UK by winning at the International Eisteddfod in Llangollen. In 1985, she went to study the Concert Harp in Chetham School of Music, in Manchester and the Royal Academy of Music (RAM) in London.

    Playing both the western concert harp and the Ku Cheng, the 21-string Chinese horizontal harp, Zi Lan Liao produces a mesmerizing blend of sounds.

    As one of the leading exponents of Chinese music Zi Lan Liao joins the Wednesday Lunchtime Concert Series with her distinctive fusion of Eastern and Western styles on traditional Chinese instrument the guzheng. An alumnus of both Chetham’s School of Music and the Royal Academy of Music, she has since recorded music for the Oscar-winning film ‘The Last Emperor’ and collaborated with artists such as Peter Gabriel.
